While Sarawak has two distinct monsoons, during the day it always experiences hot equatorial climate. The dry season in Miri extends from April to September. Between October and March it is cooler, but also wet because it is monsoon time in Miri. The average rainfall in Miri is nearly 100 to 150 inches.
Best Time to Visit Miri
Miri is best visited between March and August and later during October and November. August and September are best avoided as the smoke haze caused by wildfires and forest clearings from Kalimantan makes travel unpleasant.
Mulu
Unlike the rest of South East Asia, Mulu is less affected by the monsoon rain. The hottest period is July to September when Mulu gets less rain. Most of the rain falls from October to January and later during May and June when travel is difficult.
The north-east monsoon, which blows from December to March, and the south- west monsoon, extending from May to October, controls the climate of Gunung Mulu. During these periods, rainfall can be as high as 4000 to 5000 mm. This kind of heavy tropical rain ensures that there is no distinctly dry season here. But rainfall peaks in April and May and again in October and November. Relatively less rain falls in August and September. The peak tourist traffic here is from July to September.
